Baldur's Gate III

Larian Studios' epic RPG, took the gaming world by storm. Its a sprawling, story-driven RPG set in the rich world of Dungeons & Dragons. Players create their own characters and embark on an epic adventure, making crucial choices that shape the narrative and their relationships with a diverse cast of companions. The game features deep, tactical turn-based combat, allowing for strategic planning and varied approaches to encounters. With its immersive world, branching storylines, and a high degree of player agency, Baldur's Gate 3 offers a truly captivating and personalized RPG experience. Can time-strapped gamers enjoy this grand adventure?

• Short Sessions (45-60 minutes): Baldur's Gate 3, despite its vast scope, can sometimes be surprisingly accommodating to shorter play sessions depending on which part of the storyline you're in. You can focus on completing individual quests, exploring smaller areas, or engaging in dialogue with companions. The turn-based combat allows for strategic thinking and planning, even when time is limited. Frequent save points and the ability to pause during dialogue make it easy to pick up where you left off.

• Fulfillment: This is where it might be challenging for some. Although I was able to complete a task or two and finish a combat session, it was hard to feel a sense of accomplishment because I was biting at the bit to move along the rich storyline and learn more about each character. The rich lore and compelling characters can further enhance the experience, so playing in short bursts may cut the sense of fulfillment a little short. 

• Playability: The game's turn-based combat system allows for thoughtful planning and execution, making it accessible to players of all skill levels. The dialogue system is engaging and immersive, allowing for meaningful interactions with characters. However, the sheer amount of information and options can be overwhelming at times, especially for newcomers to the D&D universe. Larian Studios completey blew open the amount of options in this game which is great if you had the time to explore every one of them. If you think you can, you probably can. Which is a lesson I learned way too late into the game. At one point I acquired a vial of poison which I held onto for some reason instead of using it during the last combat. I ran into a giant pot of brew in a goblin camp and thought it would be funny if I could just throw the vial of poison in it to make it easier to get around. My curiosity allowed me to click around the UI and accidentally mixed the poison in the brew while one of the goblins were near me and I got caught. Thank goodness I was paranoid enought to save the game a few minutes before. That's just one example of how truly open the options are in this game. 

• Time Commitment: While individual quests and encounters can be completed in shorter sessions, the overall narrative unfolds over a vast and intricate campaign. Combine the main story with the amount of options and paths you can take and you're looking at a lot of lost time you didn't have to begin with. Completing the main story and exploring all the side content will require a significant time investment. The open world is vast and filled with distractions, making it easy to lose track of time.

Verdict:

It's no secret that Baldur's Gate 3 is a masterpiece of RPG design, offering a truly immersive and unforgettable experience. While the overall time commitment is substantial, the game's flexible structure and engaging gameplay sometimes make it possible to play some shorter sessions. But you will need to set out some extra time to feel a sense of accomplishment and have meaningful progress in the game. It's a fantastic game for those evenings when you have a bit more time to unwind and immerse yourself in a rich and rewarding fantasy world. Just be prepared to lose yourself in the Forgotten Realms, and possibly lose track of time even from the character customization screen.
